Chris Pope, the dark-haired guy behind slacker rockers Blonde Summer, has returned from his detour. Last year, Blonde Summer released an EP of synth- and drum-propelled pop that was a hard left turn from their previous three EPs of prickly, catchy indie-rock. With the new single “Beer on Ice,” the guitars are back in hand, looser and more sun-baked than ever. “It’s cool to keep things easy,” Pope says, “and that’s what this song is all about.” Huddling with producer Aaron Espinoza (Earlimart, now with Dangerbird Records), the pair “recorded the whole thing in a few clicks,” Pope says. “‘Beer On Ice’ is a place or state of mind that’s a complete shut off to the daily grind. It’s full frontal party mode where you get to hang out with your friends and talk about haircuts, who went home with whom, and FU’s to political agendas. We all gotta get up and pay the bills, but we also gotta make some ‘Beer On Ice’ time.” Get your garage-rock on, and bring the cooler. The single is out today via Dangerbird.
