The Wild Reeds have come a long way since they dipped their toes into the deep pool of vintage folk music back in 2010, and they sound like it on their new single “Only Songs.” The quintet — built on the twining harmonies of Kinsey Lee, Sharon Silva and Mackenzie Howe, backed by bassist Nick Phakpiseth and drummer Nick Jones — debuted the song today, along with the news that their third full-length, “The World We Built” would arrive on April 7 via Dualtone. The album was produced by Peter Katis (The National, Augustines, Interpol, San Fermin), and “Only Songs,” with Howe taking lead, has the balance of bold vocals and gruff guitars that fans of Jenny Lewis/Rilo Kiley will love. The song, which Howe penned, salutes the rush that only making and playing music can trigger. “It’s also about the moment when you realize no man [or] woman, relationship, or status can give you the satisfaction of the strange and holy experience that is your own creativity,” she told NPR, where the song premiered. “There’s a freedom in music found nowhere else and it doesn’t discriminate, it’s in the garage and the cathedral.”
