On his first two releases as Gold Star, Marlon Rabenreither sang as if he not only had the weight of the world on his shoulders but the weight of every man who’s done the country blues before him. The singer-songwriter and L.A. native wears his twang well on the new single “Sonny’s Blues,” the first taste of Gold Star’s sophomore album “Big Blue,” due March 24 via the Autumn Tone Records label helmed by Aquarium Drunkard. The follow-up to 2015’s “Dark Days,” “Big Blue” is named for the ramshackle Hollywood house where the songs were realized. It comes advertised as country noir, with Rabenreither citing the influence of authors Fante, Baldwin and Chandler, along with Neil Young, Leonard Cohen and Wilco. On this new single, Gold Star meets “the big blue life face to face” and it’s a wonder to behold.
