L.A.-via-Texas trio Groves debuted in late 2015 with the lush single “Ender,” and since then the Eagle Rock-based band — Stephen Salisbury, Reid Guidry and Will Smith — have played a slew of shows, released another single (“Swim”) and finished recording their debut EP. Last week they announced that release, “Not for Nothing,” would be out Feb. 17 via MDDN, the company helmed by Benji and Joel Madden of Good Charlotte. Made with producer/engineer Courtney Ballard at MDDN Studios, the EP features the new single “Urges,” a cautionary tale about watching what you wish for, which starts as alt-pop sweetness-and-light before the foreboding bombast kicks in, complete with a little shredding from Salisbury’s.
