Tennis husband-and-wife duo Patrick Riley and Alaina Moore felt estranged from their music, worn out from years of heavy touring and the burden of expectations, so they took to the sea on a sailboat, much like they did when they wrote their debut album, 2011’s “Cape Dory.” Spending five months in the Sea of Cortez, the duo wrote the songs for their fourth album, “Yours Conditionally,” out March 10 on the band’s own label, Mutually Detrimental, via Thirty Tigers. Now based in Denver, Moore and Riley self-produced and recorded the songs in a small cabin in Fraser, Colo., then had it mixed by Spoon’s Jim Eno at Public HiFi. Wistful, romantic, and fuzzy in places, “Conditionally Yours” lyrically deals a lot with Moore trying to balance femininity and feminism, needing to be cared for by people she knows and validated by those she doesn’t. The latest single, “Modern Woman” is about an estranged friendship with another woman. For the video, director Luca Venter, who also directed the band’s video for “In the Morning I’ll Be Better,” and set designer Kelia Anne staged Moore in different ladylike domestic scenarios, with Moore staring deeply into a vanity mirror, dressed up and lonely. It’s pretty and personal, but with a sense of humor about the whole charade.
