Greyface

“Greyface is the name of the cat that lives behind the 7-Eleven on Sunset and Rosemont,” Justin Taylor says of one inspiration behind the name Greyface, the latest incarnation of his music explorations with his Florida childhood pals Ryan Malina and Julien Bellin.

Greyface is also the character who curses mankind in “Principia Discordia,” the 1963 text co-authored by Malaclypse The Younger.

Some of the protagonists in the songs on “Greyola” — the trio’s debut album, out Friday — seem just feral and forlorn. The band’s melodic alt-rock echoes the restless yearning of two decades ago, when (as opposed to today) only the end of the millennium that accounted for existential dread. “I think we unconsciously channeled the ghosts of ’90s alternative rock radio — a latent affection probably due to us all growing up in Florida, pre-internet,” Taylor says. “The ‘more is more’ approach to guitars and vocals made for a lot of late night fun.

“Things don’t always work out well for the characters in the songs,” he adds, “also not a conscious decision.”
