Pop chanteuse Blake Hazard possesses one of those girl-next-door voices, imbued with a wide-eyed optimism tempered by a lyrical worldliness that suggests she knows putting on a brave face isn’t always the road to a happy ending. Those bright vocals were the calling card of three albums with the Submarines, Hazard’s on-again, off-again, on-again, off-again collaboration with John Dragonetti. Her post-breakup album “The Eleanor Islands” came out in 2013, and after a couple of one-offs (including this pre-election missive as part of the “30 Days, 30 Songs” series), she has begun to release new music again. The new single “Before the Ice” conjures up a cafĂ© scene in the Mediterranean, a distant saxophone backgrounding Hazard’s emotional negotiations. The song, made with producer Thom Monahan and featuring Casey Butler on horns, Dave Depper and Neal Casal on guitars, Gabe Noel on bass and Josh Adams on drums, was released accompanied by a remix by Xander Singh. It’s all about the metaphor in the first verse: “One more taste before the ice turns into water,” kind of a different spin on melting with you.
