“Outside (briefly)” sets itself apart from Froth‘s previous albums, “Patterns” and “Bleak” both in its instrumentation and inspiration. The Thomas Dolas-produced record is more atmospheric than psychedelic, a melodic shoegaze collection of songs that finds JooJoo Ashworth, Cameron Allen, Jeremy Katz and Nick Ventura incorporating cello, synths, Rhodes, keys and drum machines. The latter serve as an anchor on “Sensitive Girl,” a song about a girl, her lunch pail and an unpopular boy, both who like to read. For the video, Froth used Super 8 footage they captured while on tour in South Africa and Europe. Says Katz, “Ninety percent of days on tour are spent in the van, which can be boring for a film. So we tried to have as much fun as we could for the 20 minutes in between getting out of the van and loading in and that’s where most of the footage comes from.” Ashworth adds that the video shows another side of these guys’ personalities: “I like the video a lot because we don’t really make music that you would think ‘oh these guys are silly and have a sense of humor’ but we’re pretty average silly guys and you can kind of see that in the video. Especially with Cameron.”

“Outside (briefly)” comes out Feb. 24 through Wichita Recordings.
