Any song called “Loser” has layers of meaning. On the surface, there’s the matter of simply “embracing the negative,” as the song’s co-writer Bryan Sammis says of La Bouquet’s second single “Loser Baby.” Of course, there’s also the subtext that by announcing the fact you just lower expectations. That aside, the song is a beautiful slice of alt-pop mopery that introduces itself with tickling acoustic guitar before ascending into the stratosphere of self-pity. For La Bouquet — Sammis (ex-drummer for The Neighbourhood who also made music as Olivver the Kid) and longtime pal Jake Lopez — the song represents the beginning of their collaboration. “‘Loser Baby’ is the oldest song we have,” Sammis says. “We started making this song in 2013. It’s gone through more versions than any other song in our catalog. It is about facing all of your failures, mistakes and coming to terms with the fact that sometimes luck isn’t on your side.” The duo have an album in the works and will be showcasing the songs this month at their Bootleg Theater residency.
