Coachella adds Thee Commons, Shannon & the Clams and more

As they did a year ago weeks after the initial lineup announcement, promoters Goldenvoice have added some emerging bands to the lineup for the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival — including L.A. psychedelic cumbia punk quartet Thee Commons, South Bay punk veterans T.S.O.L., Bay Area garage-rockers Shannon & the Clams, L.A. post-pop quartet Slow Hollows and tropical Afro-Latin nine-piece QUITAPENAS from Riverside.
For Thee Commons, whose music and wild, often costumed performances have endeared them to L.A. audiences, the invitation took them by surprise. The day after the Grammys, the band and their manager were having a meeting with a prospective booking agent at downtown’s Grand Central Market. “Fifteen minutes into our meeting our manager excused himself and said ‘I have to take this phone call,’” David Pacheco said. “He left for what seemed like 10 minutes. When he came back he said, ‘Guys, you’re not going to believe this but you guys just got asked to perform at Coachella!’
“My reaction was, ‘Why? We’re the antithesis to what Coachella has been catering to the past few years.’ The lightbulb went on and I thought, ‘This is the perfect opportunity to shake things up!’” Pacheco added, noting that Thee Commons, like many an emerging band, always think big.
“Part of what we mentally visualize as a band when we rehearse is playing big festival events. We just didn’t know it would happen this soon.”
The additions — 14 acts in all — also include Duda Tass & the Kuwaitis, D.R.A.M., Surfbort, Diamante Electrico, Tall Juan, the Paranoyds, Downtown Boys, Las Ligas Menores and Surf Curse.
All the more reasons to arrive early in the day at Coachella. Because you never know who you’ll see:
