Ahead of playing this weekend’s Coachella music festival, Bishop Briggs delighted a very packed, sold-out show at the El Rey Theatre on April 13. She played songs from her new self-titled EP, which came out on Friday, and delivered a rousing set of her particular blend of pop, folk and electronic sounds. Not surprisingly, “River” drew a wild response from the crowd, who sang along to this and “Wild Horses,” as well as to newer tunes like “The Fire” and “Dark Side. Briggs jumped around like the stage was her trampoline, never running out of breath, smiling between expressive grimaces, and clearly happy to be connecting with the eager crowd. She said that on her way over to the venue, she passed by all the venues she had played previously, clarifying that that the term venue was generous in describing the many places she performed at over the years in L.A. During “River,” big inflatable balloons were released into the crowd. Balloons make everything better. Manatee Commune opened the show, creating beats and occasionally bringing out his violin, which added dimension to his music. Next, D.C. electro pop band SHAED came on, with twin brothers Max and Spencer Ernst switched off playing keys and guitar throughout while singer Chelsea Lee held the front with powerful vocals leading songs off their EP, “Just Wanna See.”
