Friends of the Grandaddy music family are rallying in support of the family of bassist Kevin Garcia, who died May 2 after a massive stroke. He was 41.
A GoFundMe campaign — proceeds of which will go to his wife Sondra to pay for funeral expenses, medical bills and care for the couple’s two children, Jayden and Gavin — is about two-thirds away from its $75,000 goal.
The band has postponed touring in support of their acclaimed new album “Last Place,” its first in 11 years.
Garcia was a founding member of the band, which formed in 1992. “We’re devastated to our cores from losing our companion and workmate Kevin Garcia,” drummer Aaron Burtch wrote on Grandaddy’s Facebook page. “The love, respect and admiration we felt for our Kevin was utterly without boundaries. Our hearts ache with a pain none of us have ever felt before.
“We are also stunned by this outpouring of condolences and remembrances that we’re seeing through social media and the like and it is helpful beyond words to know that people and friends from all over are sharing their remembrances and affection so that we and his beautiful family can see what he meant to you too. It is really helping and we thank you all from the bottom of our broken hearts.”
[…] The festival also announced that Grandaddy would not be performing this year; that band’s tour is on hold after the sudden death in early May of bassist Kevin Garcia. […]
