Annie Hardy’s album, “Rules,” came out in April on Full Psycho/American Primitive Records. It’s a heavy album, capturing the trauma she experienced over the last few years, losing her son and partner in close succession. Hardy pours her heart out in raw lyrics and music that progresses like a roller coaster of emotions. About halfway through “Train,” the mounting tension erupts in bells, quivering cymbals, manic piano, a chaos of noise, before the song resumes in a darker, louder tone and Hardy continues singing the line, “Here comes the train, here to take my baby away,” over and over, as she’s unraveling. It’s intense, but beautiful in its honesty and openness.
