Video: Cutty Flam, ‘Runaway’

San Fernando Valley trio Cutty Flam call their music “prom punk,” a twist on rockabilly described as “the soundtrack to a 1950s B-movie starring Ritchie Valens, opposite Bettie Page, directed by Quentin Tarantino.” Got all that? Anyway, they mix their retro-weird with retro-cool in a self-effacing, winking way, and even if you’ve heard their style of music played ad infinitum it’s easy to get pulled into their world. Which is exactly that the video for “Runaway,” directed by José Emmanuel Varela and with art direction by Ashley Taylor Stuart, does. It’s a suburban California hallucination, starring the band, a vintage Cadillac and other props. And mushrooms are involved.
The song is from the trio’s new album “Shapes of Sound,” the follow-up out to their self-released debut “Robot Heart” (2014). The new album is out Friday on Burger Records, for all your rug-cutting needs.
