Ears Wide Open: Drinker

The first single from bicoastal recording project Drinker is “Which Way Is South,” and if the title suggests a vague feeling of disorientation, so does its warm, gravity-defying ambience. Drinker’s minimalist synth-pop comes from the minds of singer-songwriter Aaron Mendelsohn and producer Ariel Loh, who met in New York after Loh had composed the score to the macabre horror film “The Eyes of My Mother.” With Loh’s analog work as a backdrop, the pair created the four songs on Drinker’s forthcoming “Happy Accident” EP. Mendelsohn has since moved to L.A. and assembled a live trio with keyboardist-singer Sissy Clemens and drummer Josh Harris. They made their live debut at the Hotel Café earlier this month. In four minutes, Drinker’s immersive single makes a strong argument that less is more.
