Expansive music with its roots in basement — that’s the abridged story of Purmamarca, the music of Los Angeles native Ryan Henry. The singer-songwriter, who recently moved back to L.A after a dozen years in Brooklyn, released the first Purmamarca full-length in 2014. This March, he followed with the aptly titled “Bring Up the Soft Dreams,” a collection of ambient psych-rock that cushions it wistful emotions in lush soundscapes. The new album was produced by Patrick Hyland, the guitarist-producer for Mitski, and three of tunes were co-written by which was self-released in March. Patrick Hyland of Mitski produced the album, and Elon Rutberg, who has worked with Kanye West. Included is the single “Rear View,” ostensibly a song of regret, which leaves the past in a cloud of dust, not to mention a mushroom cloud of distorted guitar. Henry has only recently started playing shows around L.A. (with a rotating lineup).
