J.D. King is a music collector, encompassing records, equipment and even the aesthetics that permeate his personal style. Best known as one half of The Olms with Pete Yorn, for his second solo album, “Moon Garden,” King utilized some of his favorite possessions, analog gear, 4-track tape machines, vintage mics and instruments and his own custom-built tube mixing console at his Hollywood Hills home studio, the Ramones Ranch, where he lives with Linda Ramone. The album is self-produced, featuring guest musicians Dylan Brosnan and John MF Anderson, and the engineering talents of Jon Gilbert, Samuel Shea and Jeffertitti. King describes “Moon Garden” as a “three-year experiment to find the highest-level analog sonics, totally original songwriting methods and the most fulfilling creative experience using only biological electromagnetic vibration.” In the video for the very joyful first single, “Midnight Rendezvous,” he takes the viewer on a little retro-hued excursion with three pretty girls clad in fur for some late-night cocktails and fashionable lounging. I think you can feel those vibrations.
