Following the announcement of that his debut album “Aromanticism” would be via Jagjaguwar out Sept. 22, Moses Sumney checks in with another ethereal single, “Quarrel.” Sumney puts his vocals on full display, layering them over quiet instrumentation, in part produced by Thundercat. The closest this song gets to sounding anything like a fight is ending in a high crescendo after a slow start. The yearning for a novel, more mysterious tone is quintessentially Sumney. As is the subtext: “To whom much is given / Much is required,” Sumney sings, referencing a quote by President John F. Kennedy that’s inspired by a parable in the Book of Luke. In case, you know, you need to hear somebody sounding presidential.
