Cones — the brother duo of singer-guitarist Jonathan and keyboardist-producer Michael Rosen — debuted earlier this year with the glossy single “Echoes On.” Their new synth-pop dalliances are “Whatever You’re Into” and “Back in the Brain,” both released via Canvasclub, Canvasback Music’s monthly singles series. And they’re easier than a breezy summer afternoon in a hammock overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
Jonathan explains that “Whatever You’re Into” is about being compliant, and what that implies: “[It’s] about being at the wheel late at night, driving somebody wherever they wish to go. It’s about being a people-pleaser, a vehicle for somebody else’s desires. Is their vision the same as yours? It can be hard to decipher. Oftentimes a fog settles between, as it does on a road in the middle of the night. So you’ve got no choice but to drive through it with your brights on.”
The San Francisco-reared, L.A.-based brothers have a background playing (and writing with) Eleanor Friedberger; Jonathan’s day gig is doing animation, Michael is a commercial and film composer. In Cones, the sensibilities meld in the name of music whose lush feel comes with addictive grooves. Did we mention easy?
