When we think “bedroom pop,” the first things that come to mind are inscrutably lo-fi, stoney, with a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it presence of mind that basically guarantees you’ll forget the song and artist in a week’s time. For when your ear hungers for more than just candy, do your soul a solid and feed it the new single “Talk a Lot” from Orlando-based SALES, comprised of guitarist/singer Lauren Morgan and drummer Jordan Shih. The relentlessly creative duo sticks to the noble DIY ethic and tag-teams the production of a clean, original songwriting formula that consists of silky arpeggios, vacuum-sealed percussion and coolly confident vocals, yielding a product that we’d file under “music to help us get things done.” The slight stutter of their uncluttered pop package has SALES sounding like a cherubic Billie Holiday sang hooks over a boom-bap rap record from the early ’90s, with clear-as-a-bell guitar lines complementing the lilting vocal melodies. “Talk a Lot” is their first single since the release of their debut self-titled album in April 2016. For fans of TOPS, Homeshake and Frankie Cosmos.
