Playing in front of a huge backdrop of their “Freedom Is Free” album cover, L.A. quartet Chicano Batman turned the sold-out Fonda Theatre into a sea of hopping, swaying and dancing bodies on Thursday night. It was the first of three sold-out nights for Chicano Batman, dressed in their ’70s-style suits and modern sneakers. They shushed the ecstatic crowd at the beginning before launching into their long, feel-good set.
Rudy De Anda opened the night with an energetic set that ended with him perched on a barrier between the crowd and stage, singing and playing guitar. He was followed by Texas trio Khraungbin, who like the headliners were dressed to impressed and whose set — material from a release coming in January — went from funk to shredding guitar solos to remixes of Snoop Dogg.
Chicano Batman returns to the Fonda tonight and Saturday.
