There were plenty of eye-catching fashion accessories at the third annual Dirtybird Campout. There were people in flimsy summer wear, of course, along with Scout uniforms, a guy in Jesus garb, even a fellow dressed like a slice of pizza. Most practical, though, were the bandanas, as the crowd not only danced up a storm but kicked up a dust storm for three days.
The festival — an electronic music gathering with a kids’ summer camp vibe — spent its first year at the San Antonio Campground near Lake San Antonio, not far from Lightning in a Bottle’s home, after spending 2016 and 2015 at Orange County;’s Oak Canyon Park. Fans heard all manner of house music and assorted variants, with DJs and performers holding forth from the front porch of a log cabin. The long weekend ended with the camp’s head “counselor” Claude VonStroke (née Barclay Crenshaw, founder of 12-year-old Dirtybird Records) heading up a back-to-back-to-back-to-damned-near-infinity set with a host of the DJs who’d performed over the weekend.
