Ears Wide Open: The Neuroses

The best thing about the plethora of free residency shows at L.A. clubs is that you never know what you’ll run across. Like last Monday at the Echo, when a seemingly innocuous trip the patio revealed the Neuroses, who were performing on the small outdoor stage. And there we remained planted while the Los Angeles quartet blasted through songs on their debut album “Someday We’ll Fall Asleep,” which they self-released earlier this year despite the fact it is not mastered. Yes, the album’s production quality is an issue, but the force of visceral indie-rock and post-punk is strong in the Neuroses’ nine songs outing. The album is largely the work of songwriter Joshua Elza Tucci (vocals and guitar) and Hañalina Lucero (vocals and bass), joined live by Joe Lamiell and Suzi Karnatz. Theirs is the kind of earnest (though superficially nonchalant) racket that launched a slew of co-ed indie bands in the ’90s. And for the time being, they’re the kind of band you can see knowing that what you’re hearing live blows the doors off the record.
