Every single year, veteran music journalist Randy Lewis of the Los Angeles Times is tasked with compiling a roundup of new releases of holiday tunes. It is not an assignment we envy, because how many remakes, in how many different genres, of “Silver Bells” can you hear before your head turns into a marshmallow?
So it is with much admiration that we plumbed Lewis’ research — find his reviews here — for this year’s The Wholly Holiday Music Mix.
Come for Cheap Trick’s cover of the Kinks’ “Father Christmas,” an original song by Hanson and Susan Holloway’s mash-up of “Joy to the World” (the carol and the Three Dog Night song), stay for a Josh Groban-Tony Bennett duet, a Gwen Stefani-Blake Shelton collab and Butch Walker’s boozy “Jingle Bell Rock.” L.A. trio MUNA is here too, along with Sia/Greg Kurstin, 98 Degrees and Pentatonix, doing a Pentatonix-like take on Leonard Cohen. And did we mention Elvis?
Stay seasonal, friends.
