Ears Wide Open: Bekon

Bekon’s name flew around music circles this spring when it turned up as the secret agent in the production credits on Kendrick Lamar’s album “DAMN.” Bekon turned out to be Dan Tannenbaum, aka Danny Keyz, who has a decade’s worth of writing and production credits for the likes of Eminem, Cypress Hill, Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Redman, Aloe Blacc and BJ The Chicago Kid, to name a few. Today, Tannenbaum came out as a solo artist — a stony agent of pop, complete with Bond girls — with the song “Cold As Ice.” Forgiving some lyrical non sequiturs (“Cold as ice / She melts my heart in the summertime” has a chilling effect), the single is a shimmering lament with distinctive, cinematic production, right down to the cascading keys. The vibe is sort of a hybrid of Brill Building pop, New Edition and the Beach Boys’ “Warmth of Sun,” to throw even more temperature terms into the fire. “Cold As Ice” is out via Bekon’s own Candy and Promises label, and he promises there is more to come.
