“I’m a Man,” the title track from Whispertown’s fourth album, is a mediation about identity and understanding — singer-songwriter Morgan Nadler’s reminder that the kind of “man” we all are, first and foremost, is human. Heather Porcaro’s video for the tune begins with a Native American proverb about walking in another (hu)man’s shoes, before taking the whole footwear thing literally, though with a light touch.
“The first time I listened to ‘I’m a Man,’ I saw a red high heel and a cowboy boot on either foot walking on a dirt path in my mind’s eye,” says Porcaro, who pitched the idea to Nagler. “Morgan’s lyrics and Jake Bellows’ production really inspired me. It is an important reminder to put yourself in others shoes. You never really know what anyone is really going through or how they really feel. A lot of the time talking doesn’t do justice to express the reality of ones pain. It is somatic. The best we can do for others is imagine ourselves in their place and situation and think what that would feel like for ourselves and from that place, then hopefully be able to be of service. It is also a reminder that we are not alone.”
The video was shot on an iPhone. And, Porcaro says, “We used Trader Joe’s gift cards from our mothers for the flowers.”
