When he’s not manning the drums for artists like Morrissey, Garbage, Smashing Pumpkins or Filter, Chicago’s Matt Walker is making ambient, experimental music under the name of1000Faces, the on-again, off-again “obsession” he debuted in 2013. The composer-producer’s project invites a lot of collaborators — such as singer Jimmy Gnecco on last spring’s “Sleeping’s for Dreamers” and Brandon Robbins of the Moth & the Flame on “MMDDYYYY.” The latter is a sweeping and urgent six minutes that at its core is a meditation on time. Even more impressive, of1000Faces this week released the four-song EP “DDMMYYYY Variations,” offering different takes and instrumentations of the song. It is nothing if not a fairly stunning lesson on what an artist can put on a song’s skeleton.
There are a lot of faces in of1000Faces’ video for the song too — filmed by Derick Smith and directed by Walker, Smith and Brian Doherty, it debuted this week as well.
