Fans of Joyce Manor were all aboard with the idea of the L.A. punk-rockers playing a show at Union Station — the quartet played two on Saturday, filling the historic Ticket Concourse with an energetic crowd. In fact, things might have been too rowdy for security, who tried to stifle the crowd-surfing and moshing that typically accompanies a Joyce Manor show.
Peach Kelli Pop kicked off the matinee show, with guitarist Sophie Negrini explaining how she was excited to play at Union Station, as she uses the station often for her everyday travels. Surf Curse followed, turning up the energy, as drummer Nicholas Rattigan slammed away at his kit (and at one point accidentally tossing away a drumstick and then finishing the song with only one). Throughout the set, moshing and crowd-surfing escalated, and afterward, security got on a mic and told the crowd that anyone who crowd-surfed would be escorted out of the train station and would not be let back in.
As he sun began to set, the large ticketing hall of Union Station got darker, and Joyce Manor took the stage. The Torrance quartet blasted through their set — including a punk cover of “Video Killed the Radio Star” — with the crowd shouting the songs’ lyrics right back at them. Despite the previous warnings from security, the crowd continued to crowd-surf and mosh throughout the set. They avoided ejection by just staying in the crowd. Only a few unlucky kids were tossed out.
