Unsatisfied with the present incarnation of rock ’n’ roll, Orange County natives the Jacks were looking for something pure. They found inspiration in the sounds of the British invasion. The foursome took a time machine back 50 years to mine for influences, capturing the essence of Southern California in the ’60s, convertibles, sunshine, the beach, pretty girls and not having a care in the world.
Vocalist/guitarist Jonny Stanback’s raw delivery carries a nod to garage rock, while lead guitarist Tom Hunter, bassist Scott Stone, and drummer Josh Roossin remake the blues much in the spirit of the Black Keys. Hailing from Newport Beach, the duo of Hunter and Stone (friends since kindergarten) had been playing together in one form or another since junior high school. While attending USC together, the pair stumbled upon Stanback’s solo set and convinced him to start a band. Roosin joined the fold on drums shortly thereafter. Success was swift, as they entered the regional KLOS Next2Rock Competition and placed first out of 350 bands. They did not move on to the national competition as they disagreed with the terms of a record deal the were required to sign in order to continue.
The Jacks’ EP, which includes their new single “Hello My Friend,” will be released in March.
