Say what? King Tut? Frolicking with the pharoah, and nine other happening things this weekend, from hip-hop dance to LEGO art to Latin food to vintage cars to really, really salty talk.
FRIDAY, MARCH 23
ANDY BAUCH: NEW MONEY (Art pop-up)
Castelli Art Space presents “New Money”—a weekend pop-up art show featuring works by LEGO artist Andy Bauch. The exhibit features more than a dozen works that include 100,000+ LEGO bricks and imbued with secret keys to Bitcoin wallets so the value fluctuates with the currency. New Money questions the value of art, money, work and automation. The opening reception is on Friday from 7 to 10 p.m. on Friday. The works are on view from noon to 10 p.m. on Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday.
SHUT UP & DANCE! (Hip-hop dance fest)
“Shut up & Dance!” The Bootleg’s annual hip-hop choreography and dance festival returns on Friday (at 7:30 p.m.) and Saturday (at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.). This year’s showcase of urban dance choreography with fusions of West African, dancehall rhythms, b-boys, hip-hop, house, crumping, locking, poetry and more include works by Aisha Bardge, Raélle Dorfan, Envy Dance Co., JanFam: The Movement, Kassy Francis, Keilah Glover, Kenneth Maloloyon, Rubi Morales, Cyrian Reed, Chris Scarver and Harry Weston. Tickets range from $15 – $50.
SATURDAY, MARCH 24
SHADES & SHADOWS 24 (Reading)
“Shades and Shadows,” the reading/story series dedicated to dark fantasy, horror and science fiction, takes place at on Saturday at 8 p.m. at Bearded Lady’s Mystic Museum in Burbank. Hosted by Lauren Candia and Xach Fromson, the evening brings together authors who read from their own works. On the program this weekend are readings by: Mishell Baker, PJ Manney, JD Horn, Sean Patrick Traver, Christina Enquist and Roh Morgon. Tickets: $10.
KING TUT: TREASURES OF THE GOLDEN PHARAOH (History)
“King Tut: Treasures of the Golden Pharaoh” opens at the California Science Center on Saturday. The exhibition celebrates the 100-year anniversary of the discovery of King Tut’s tomb, showcasing 150 artifacts from King Tut’s celebrated tomb — 60 of which have never traveled outside of Egypt until this showing. Advanced timed ticket purchase is required. Adult tickets: $23.95-$29.95. Discounts available for students, seniors and children.
¡LATIN FOOD FEST! (Food + drinks)
“The Latin Food Fest” returns for its sixth edition to Santa Monica on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Santa Monica Pier Area / Ocean Avenue. Admission includes all food, wine, beer and spirits, a music performance by Sonsoles and cooking demos. Participating chefs include Ricardo Zarate, Marcela Valladolid, Enrique Olvera, Richard Sandoval, Josiah Citrin, Ingrid Hoffmann, Hugo Miranda, Chef LaLa and more. Tickets: $39 general (entry at noon), $49 for early admission at 11 a.m. and VIP entry at 11 a.m.
SELLING THE DIGITAL SERIES (Film/TV)
L.A.’s beloved Meltdown Comics and Nerdmelt Showroom are closing at the end of the month so hit up the shows and offerings while you can. On Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m., attend the lecture, “Selling the Digital Series.” Join host Julia Prescott as she reveals what you need to break into Super Deluxe, Maker, YouTube Red and more. Panelists feature execs from Project Greenlight Studios, writers, directors and others. Tickets: $8 in advance, $10 at the door.
SUNDAY, MARCH 25
LA CARRETERA CAR SHOW (Vintage cars + Vintage music)
“La Carretera Car Show” is an automotive and music gathering fashioned in the spirit of the 1950s La Carrera Panamericana races in Mexico. The event takes place on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the Arts District. View cars from the ’50s to ’70s, while DJs play Mexican and American music from the ’50s and ’60s. BBQ will be served all day long with beer, spirits, coffee and other refreshments. The event is family friendly outdoor event; kids 12 and younger get in for free. Dogs are welcome. Profits will be donated to the nonprofit Para Los Ninos. The exact location of the venue will be released on Saturday. Entry: $12.
CITY AND COSMOS: THE ARTS OF TEOTIHUACAN (Art & Archaeology)
LACMA and Mexico’s Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH) have organized the new exhibition “City and Cosmos: The Arts of Teotihuacan,” which opens on Sunday at LACMA. The ancient city of Teotihuacan flourished in central Mexico in the first millennium BCE, and it was the largest urban center in the Americas at the time and the sixth largest in the world. City and Cosmos presents findings from archaeological projects excavating at Teotihuacan’s three main pyramids and major residential areas. The exhibition opens on Sunday at the Resnick Pavilion and remains on view through July 15.
ART + FEMINISM 2018: WOMEN + FILM (Wikipedia-a-thon)
Also at LACMA on Sunday is the fifth annual meetup in partnership with Art + Feminism, a global DIY campaign that works toward improving the coverage of women, feminism and the arts on Wikipedia. The “Art + Feminism Edit-a-Thon” focuses on women and film (as well as the related #MeToo and Times Up movements). The day begins at noon with a panel featuring Claudia Puig (president, Los Angeles Film Critics Association), Lucy Mukerjee-Brown (director of programming, Outfest) and Dilcia Barrera (associate curator of film programs, LACMA). The Wikipedia training workshop begins at 2 p.m. with Stacey Allan (cofounder, East of Borneo and regional ambassador, Art + Feminism) followed by an edit-a-thon. The event is free and Wikipedia beginners are welcome. Held at the Art + Technology Lab at LACMA.
GET SALTY (Comedy benefit)
“Get Salty” is an annual comedy standup show benefitting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation at the World Famous Comedy Store on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. The lineup is awesome, even without the Secret Celebrity Headliner: Wayne Federman (Curb Your Enthusiasm), Jackie Tohn (GLOW), Mary Lynn Rajskub (24, Always Sunny) and Brice Keltner (TwEENAGERS), with Richelle Meiss hosting. Tickets: $35 plus two drink minimum.
