“You’re pulling at my heartstrings,” Sydney Banta sings on her new single as L.A. Girlfriend, “Possession,” sounding almost distraught that those mythological, tensile things aren’t holding up better under pressure from her love interest. The song’s icy ’80s beat, bristling textures and stabbing guitars seemingly elevate her agitation even more: It’s a situation that she acknowledges won’t last, but for now, as she concludes, “you possess me.”

The single is the first fuzz-bomb from L.A. Girlfriend’s new EP “Regina,” out June 15. It continues a creative stretch that began with the 2016 full-length “Neon Gray” and continued with last year’s “Rex” EP. Banta wrote and produced the EP, with a little boost from engineer Nathan Whitcomb, and that’s Ian Lecklitner adding some of the caustic guitar parts. Banta is already at work on a new full-length, too.
