Johnny Marr gave a crisp, upbeat performance on Tuesday night at the Teragram Ballroom full of lively banter, songs from his new album “Call the Comet” (out June 15*) and select tunes from the Smiths’ catalog.
Leading into the new single “Bug” — one of eight songs he played from the new album — Marr said, “Well, I promised I’d leave politics out of it … So this one’s dedicated to you-know-who. What’s ‘American’ for ‘fuckin’ wanker’?”
It was the first of two sold-out nights at the Teragram, and Marr was in high spirits. Before playing the 1991 Electronic single “Getting Away With It,” he admitted, “This is fun. This is the best I’ve felt all day, and that’s really saying something!” And later, before the big sing-along to the Smiths’ “There Is a Light” and before he played his 2014 single “Boys Get Straight,” Marr asked the crowd if they had any requests. That inspired a lot of wisecracks, with people shouting out songs that weren’t his, to which Marr quipped “Do you see any beards up on this stage? … Or a laptop?”
Marr reprises the show tonight.
