Summer Happenings at the Broad: Kim Gordon & YoshimiO, Matmos, Terry Riley, Gang Gang Dance and more

The Broad has announced the four dates and the 35-plus performers for the third edition of their Summer Happenings series.
Each night is themed around the contemporary art museum’s exhibits and collections. The lineup is the result of collaborative curation by the “Afro-Punk” documentary director/festival co-founder James Spooner, Creative Independent editor-in-chief and former Pitchfork director of editorial operations Brandon Stosuy and co-director/curator of the Vacant gallery Ryu Takahashi, with the Broad’s associate director of events and programs Darin Klein.
Tickets for the 21-and-older series range from $30 in advance per show to $95 for a series pass. More information and tickets are available at www.thebroad.org/happenings.
The lineup:
June 30: “A Journey That Wasn’t, Part 1” (opening day of the exhibit sharing the same title), with Gang Gang Dance, DJ Stretch Armstrong, Terry Riley, Marie Daulne (aka Zap Mama), Jean Grae and her Church of Infinite You choir, Tara Jane O’Neil with Jmy James Kid and the Sunland Dancers and Carolyn Pennypacker Riggs.
July 28: “Social Shaman” (co-presented with Goethe-Institut, inspired by Fluxus artist Joseph Beuys), with Kraut rock founders faUSt, Matmos, Pharmakan, FlucT, Nelson Patton with Lonnie Holley and DJ sets by Eye (of Boredoms) and Total Freedom.
Aug. 25: “The Greater Body (Shi-Dati)” (curation assistance by Modern Sky USA’s Sijie Liu and composer/performer/curator Du Yun), with Re-TROS, MIIIA, Asian Dope Boys (ADB) with Aïsha Devi, FAZI, Zhou Hongbo’s “Lotus Fairy” documentary, Jie Ma with Daniel Collás and Juliet Swango (of the Phenomenal Handclap Band), Yan Jun (founder of the Sub Jam label and member of Far East Network- FEN), Shave N’ Shut, Hell City and Ji Dongyong’s “Ban 2.0” featuring Dai Zifan.
Sept. 29: “A Journey That Wasn’t, Part 2” (a further exploration of the exhibit’s themes of time manipulation, memory, appropriation and repetition), with Kim Gordon with YoshimiO (of Boredoms, Free Kitten, SAICOBAB and founder of OOIOO), the Opera Ball curated by Purple Crush featuring Ranika (formerly Kevin) JZ Prodigy, DJ Michael “5000” Watts, Arto Lindsay, Dedekind Cut, Laraaji with Arji OceAnanda, and Josiah Steinbrick (of BANANA).
