Supporting their debut full-length album “When I Think of You in a Castle,” released earlier in April via Polyvinyl Records, Post Animal brought their brand of Chicago-bred psychedelic, heavy garage-rock to the Bootleg Theater. Opening with their heaviest song off the new album “Gelatin Mode,” Post Animal set the tone for the evening: hot and heavy. While band members Dalton Allison (bass), Jake Hirshland (guitar/keyboard), Javi Reyes (guitar), Wesley Toledo (drums) and Matt Williams (guitar) ripped through songs from the album such as “Ralphie” and “Tire Eyes,” the young crowd threw themselves around in a frenzied mosh pit, at times leaping off the edge of the stage to crowd-surf. Post Animal also played a number of songs from their earlier EPs such as “Goggles” & “Alabaster” off of “Post Animal Perform the Most Curious Water Activities,” and “You Were Not There” from “The Garden Series.” The jam-packed Bootleg and wild crowd supplied the hot, and Post Animal brought the heavy into the late hours of Friday night. (The band plays again tonight at the Constellation Room.)

Hailing from the “frozen tundra” of Madison, Wis. (said frontwoman Emily Massey), the dream-punk quartet Slow Pulp rocked the stage prior to Post Animal. This was Slow Pulp’s second show with Post Animal, and they will be joining them for the remainder of their tour dates across the West.

The show was opened by local act BOYO, this time just Robert Tilden alone with an acoustic guitar and a slew of pedals.
