Ears Wide Open: Cannons

For better than four years, L.A. trio Cannons have been trying to find fertile soil in the well-tilled earth of laid-back-but-funky synth-pop, or “nu disco,” if you need a sexy nu appellation. Whether they’ve found any probably depends on your affection for elastic synths, glossy production and cooing female vocals. The band — Ryan Clapham, Paul Davis and Michelle Joy — followed up a handful of EPs with a 2017 full-length, the aptly titled “Night Drive.” Now they’re restarting their engines for a new EP, “In a Heartbeat,” coming this summer. Their new single “Round and Round” is a head-bobbing slice of pop noir that will make you nostalgic for 2014. Or 1986.
