The Michigan band of almost-all-brothers Greta Van Fleet made a triumphant return to Los Angeles on Sunday night, making the wait well worth it for fans (patient after two cancellations) to see them rock their new double EP “From the Fires” at the John Anson Ford Amphitheatre. Josh, Jake and Sam Kiszka, along with drummer Danny Wagner, electrified the evening air in the outdoor venue, entrancing the sold-out crowd with their heavy rock ‘n roll blues. All the classic elements were present in ample measure: extended and intricate guitar solos, earth shaking drums, hefty bass lines, and the incantations of singer Josh reaching Robert Plant-esque falsetto at just the right times to keep the mixture boiling hot. The sold-out crowd savored every bite.
Massachusetts grunge-punk trio Slothrust opened, turned up to 11, with a set that included their version of Britney Spears’ “…Baby One More Time” from their covers album, “Show Me How You Want It to Be,” released last year on Dangerbird Records.
Setlist: Highway Tune, Edge of Darkness, When the Cold Wind Blows, Talk on the Street, Flower Power, You’re the One, Evil (Howlin’ Wolf cover), Mountain of the Sun, Watching Over, Lover Leaver Taker Believer. Encore: Black Smoke Rising, Safari Song
