Video: Doe Paoro, ‘Over’

Under her persona Doe Paoro, singer-songwriter Sonia Kreitzer married R&B and ’80s electronica to good effect on her 2015 album, “After.” Now she’s gone further old-school — “Soft Power” (out Oct. 19 via Anti-), her third album, crackles with a sound reminiscent of girl-group pop and vintage soul. On the new single “Over,” it’s a good fit.

The album, made under the watchful ears of Grammy-winning producer Jimmy Hogarth (Amy Winehouse, Sia, Paolo Nutini), was recorded live to tape in London. It’s largely piano-driven pop inspired by Kreitzer’s long affection for Carole King. Of the album’s title, she explains: “There’s a quote in the Tao Te Ching about how the ‘the gentlest thing in the world overcomes the hardest thing in the world,’ That is, there’s another form of power that’s just as strong: the power of patience, compassion and forgiveness. I sought refuge in this idea of gentle power. The album is about unlocking this kind of power and learning to channel it toward others as well as myself.”

Director Clara Mouton’s video for “Over” subtly explores that, as the protagonist works through her emotional turmoil before finally being able to turn the page. “This video is a meditation on process,” the songwriter says. “Boredom and necessity are both fertile conditions to welcome in the creative spirit. In the case of ‘Over,’ writing the song was my healing. In the video, creativity is also the salve for the protagonist.”
