It didn’t take Marissa Longstreet long to find a place on the nascent Eastside rock scene (especially with its current coterie of strong female voices) after she moved to Los Angeles from upstate New York. It took the singer-songwriter-guitarist a little longer to craft the first formal release by her project SLUGS, but it’s proved worth the wait.

“Bad Twin” is the first single from the quartet’s EP, “Cool World,” which is currently available on CD and cassette at the band’s Monday night residency at the Echo and will be issued digitally next Friday. The song balances the melodic tint of New Wave while swinging from the heels emotionally, ’90s-style — it’s a song for anybody who crushes on crushing guitars.

SLUGS made their EP with producer Zack Fisher at Big Bad Sound. The lineup featured bassist-singer Sarsten Noice, a Montana transplant who met Longstreet when the pair worked together in a Hollywood coffeeshop, along with guitarist Josh Beavers and Longstreet’s brother James on drums. Drummer Dash Hutton (ex-Haim) has joined the live lineup.
