Wrapping up their current North American tour in support of their latest album, “Ordinary Corrupt Human Love,” San Francisco’s Deafheaven took command of the Wiltern stage on Saturday evening. With guttural screams from frontman George Clarke rattling through the room, thunderous drumming from Daniel Tracy shaking the building to its foundation, and the intricate and progressive guitar work of Kerry McCoy, Shiv Mehra, and bassist Chris Johnson, Deafheaven’s “blackgaze” (a sweaty mix of black metal and shoegaze) came to life with a fevered purse, and brought all the metal heads out to head bang. Despite having a setlist of only eight songs, Deafheaven pounded through their heavy, progressive tunes late into the evening.
Another uniquely engaging mix of subterranean genres came in the form of locals Drab Majesty. With their particular futuristic space goth look, the duo came on stage eerily matching, and through vibrant smoke and lights mesmerized the crowd with their brand of dark-synthwave-electronica. Hailing from New York City, Uniform opened up the show with fast-paced, heavy noise-rock.
