The latest single from DAVIS, the nom de tune of Davis Fetter, is a banger with a sing-songy chorus and wall-rattling drums, so it’s surprising to hear that it came during the singer-songwriter’s existential crisis.
“It was written during a time when I lost hope in what I was doing,” he says of “Peace Love and Rock n Roll,” his first new music since 2017. “I’d struggled for years trying to force my songwriting to be more pop, more mainstream, up the middle, etc. But despite whatever success I found along that path, I’d failed myself. I lost sight of the reason I got into music. I forgot why I picked up a guitar in the first place. I was broke, tired and frustrated. I was angry. And my life was suffering for it.
“It’s always in your darkest moments that you gain an amazing sense of clarity. You might be emotionally at your lowest, but it allows you to finally see things as they really are. … Despite being broke, tired and frustrated, I realized that all I wanted in life was a little peace, love, and rock ānā roll. This song is who I am. It’s what I believe in.”
The song, out last week, marks a welcome addition to the catalog of an artist who can switch genres like most people change socks and who once sang “I Won’t Let the World Break My Heart.” DAVIS’s last EP came out two years ago this month, and he has concentrated on releasing nothing but singles since then. Some of his material has found its way into television shows, advertisements and video games (“Get Mine,” which features vocals from Ryan Tedder, is in the video game “Far Cry 5”). It’s not hard to find something you’ll like.
