Yumi Zouma (Christie Simpson, Sam Perry, Charlie Ryder and Josh Burgess) have been held together by email, stems and file-sharing services since the band members physically splintered across continents after the 2011 Christchurch earthquake in New Zealand.
This week, they teased another New Wave/twee-pop gem. “In Camera” (produced by the band, mixed by Jacob Portrait of Unknown Mortal Orchestra and mastered by Shawn Hatfield) is the lead track off “EP III,” the last of a three-EP series the group has slowly released in between albums since 2014.
Equal parts the Cars, Hall & Oates, the Sundays and Fleetwood Mac, the song is about giving relationships another chance and making amends through communication (i.e., that age-old method called picking up the telephone and actually talking). In this case, it goes well, as Simpson sings, “Like a fool I call you on a Saturday / Nothin’ better to do than try and explain / I guess it’s only fair to say you wore me out to assure you’ve aged / You tell me you were just standing thin, a dog-like fallin’ down within / I come alive for the first time…”
Recording the EP renewed a buoyancy in the band’s spirits, as well, “There is something really special about the EP format. It’s been so long since we worked on one that we all had forgotten how fun and liberating they can be,” they said, “… bouncing endless revisions of a song until it’s right, falling asleep on FaceTime trying to write lyrics together and the exhilaration of waking up to NEW SONG VERSION 5 — it threw us back to how we worked on material when we thought no one would ever listen.”
“EP III” will be released digitally via Cascine on Sept. 28 and on 10″ vinyl on Nov. 16.
