“I don’t mind if I never know your secrets,” Chloe Chaidez sings longingly, as if telling her partner it’s OK to keep some things a mystery, letting go of her need to know everything. “Secrets,” the first song on Kitten’s new double-single is overtly pop and doesn’t attempt to hide major ’80s influences with its use of straightforward, heavy-hitting drums and wailing guitars along with the synth and strings. The second song, “Mercury” has even more of that ’80s pop feel, complete with clap machine and chiming synths that channel Whitney Houston and Madonna, with a little Haim thrown in for modern-day reference.

Chaidez describes her music as songs to “dance and cry [to] all at once.” While the upbeat nature of the songs may inspire the listener to hit the dance floor, the lyrics are full of longing. “It seems like we’ll never all be together” she sings in “Mercury,” a song that gets personal about her parents’ divorce.

“Secrets” follows the release of the band’s EP “Pink Champagne,” released on June 1, and was produced by David Stagno and Parker Silzer IV.
