Not a single person who ever witnessed Charles Bradley needs to be convinced he was the real deal — the late-blooming “Screamin’ Eagle of Soul” poured every ounce of his spirit into his singing. His underdog story (his debut album was released when he was 63) and that outsized passion won him thousands of fans, who mourned his passing last September after a battle with cancer.
On Nov. 9, the week Bradley would have turned 70, Dunham Records (an imprint of Daptone) will release the posthumous album “Black Velvet” (Bradley’s stage name when he toiled as a James Brown impersonator). The album consists of 10 recordings that heretofore never made it out of the studio, assembled by the co-writer/producer Tommy “TNT” Brenneck and culled from the sessions that yielded his first three full-lengths.
Included is “I Feel a Change,” which was recorded during the making of 2013’s “Victim of Love.” The video for the track, directed by Living On Soul’s Jeff Broadway and Cory Bailey, is a sweet homage to the man. It will have Bradley fans smiling through some tears.
