New Order was on the money, Santigold wore money and Princess Nokia cashed in on the diversity of the crowd Saturday at the first day of the Music Tastes Good festival at Marina Green Park in Long Beach.

The main stage headliners, U.K. greats New Order played a hit-laden set (including “Blue Monday” and “Bizarre Love Triangle”), finishing with Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart (Again).” That followed a strong set by Broken Social Scene, the Canadian ensemble who played their album “You Forgot It in People” (15 years old this month) in its entirety. Noting the current political and cultural climate, BSS dedicated “Anthem for a Seventeen Year-Old Girl” to women, then finished their set by inducing the whole crowd to scream, primal scream-style.

Santigold arrived in an outer-garment draped with dollar bills and plastic bills, inciting a pit party by throwing beach balls and inflatable donuts, watermelons and pizza slices into the crowd. She finished by inviting a bunch of photographers and fans onstage to dance.

During her set, Princess Nokia called out for the people in front to allow young people of color closer to the stage (she thought too many white people got to be in the front) and asked everyone to understand and be an ally. To end her set she sang a song for her brother, who committed suicide, explaining that he was “fabulous” and that she was the first person he came out to. She spoke to queer people in the audience, affirming that there is a place for them in the world.

Local artists Blake Mills, Cherry Glazerr and Feels turned in strong performances, and the afternoon started with a set from Haunted Summer.
