The first day of the Adult Swim Festival at ROW DTLA was like playing a game of ping-pong with your pop culture. There was music, comedy, musical comedy, DJ sets, games (miniature golf!) and other assorted attractions, most all featuring artists and personalities with some kind of association with the network.

You could be riding a hot dog (a mechanical bull-type attraction) one minute and rocking out with Wavves (who played too early) the next. Or watching Tim Heidecker and Greg Turkington riff their “On Cinema!” series live, and then diving into Clams Casino’s DJ set and High on Fire’s metal mayhem. The music ranged from hard rock to hip-hop to punk to gothic rock to electronic music of all shades, and there was a smattering of stand-up to break up a lot of it. There was also an obstacle course called Smack Up My Uvula.

The Brainfeeder label flexed its muscles, with Flying Lotus closing out the Tabby Stage with a new 3D show — which followed a set of Thundercat’s wizardry, Hannibal Buress’ comedy, Georgia Anne Muldrow’s electro-soul and Dorian Concept’s synth-scapes.

Heavy metal heroes Mastodon capped the night at the Calico Stage with a dozen songs from across their seven-album career, including 2002’s “March of the Fire Ants” (early) and “Steambreather” and “Show Yourself,” from their 2017 album, in the middle of the set.
