The Triforium Project, dedicated to “the restoration and re-imagining of the World’s first ‘polyphonoptic’ sculpture in Los Angeles,” is bringing “Triforium Fridays: A Three-Part Series of Polyphonoptic Parties” to downtown L.A. this fall.

Reggie Watts, Julianna Barwick and Thao Nguyen (of Thao and the Get Down Stay Down) will perform on consecutive Friday nights starting Oct. 19 at the corner of Main and Temple streets.

Designer Joseph Young completed the six-story, 60-ton structure in 1974 as more than eye candy. According to event organizers, “Its 1,494 multicolored glass cubes were designed to glow in synchrony to music from a 79-note glass bell carillon, making it the largest musical instrument of its kind on Earth.” An impressive effort was made to restore the lights and sound after decades of disrepair and its early computer system was gutted and sold. But the 8-bit paper tapes remain. They’ve been “transcoded into modern software” and organizers are excited to announce, “the Triforium will live again.”

The interactive lineup for the free, all-ages series includes “scent activations” by Maxwell Williams of the Institute for Art and Olfaction to round out three of the five senses (bring a friend to perhaps round out the remaining senses):
