Above: Y La Bamba is a Portland neuvo Latino folk band and the vehicle for the vocal and lyrical ministrations of Luz Elena Mendoza, who delivers powerful messages about identity, empowerment and community in two languages. Mendoza’s musical journey began over a decade ago when she became seriously ill on a trip to India. Her ensuing recovery and her life as the daughter of Mexican immigrants inform Y La Bamba’s music, which included the widely lauded 2016 album “Ojos Del Sol.” This week, Y La Bamba will release the new single “Mujeres: (live version), and the band will have two appearances on the weekend. They are part of the bill at Saturday’s Dia De Los Muertos celebration at Hollywood Forever Cemetery (tickets). And on Sunday, Y La Bamba will headline the Lodge Room, with Kera supporting (tickets).
