Jimmy Sweet is the singer-songwriter-crooner who for a handful of releases from 2014 to ’16 fronted the cinematic retro-pop band Lady Low. Now that the members have gone their separate ways, Sweet has embarked on remaking — “revamping,” he calls it — some of Lady Low’s singles and releasing them under his own name. They are not drastic re-imaginations — Sweet still sings like a man who believes true love is only three whiskeys away, and there are still the Kaitlin Wolfberg-helmed string parts that sound like something the Verve would steal.

“When I Do Wrong” is the finest of the bunch; the new version adds a female chorus at the beginning before launching into the simple, hypnotizing chord progression that dominates the song. The video, directed by Miles Szanto and starring Bill Sebastian, is five minutes of riveting cinema. We’re not going to spoil it here — suffice to say that a man with a secret goes to the desert to be by himself, and be himself. Oh, the dances we do.

Sweet says he will be releasing fresh material in early 2019.
