In between playing guitar or bass for a slew of other artists, Liv Slingerland has been working on her own music, a sleeker-by-the-minute twist on modern power-pop that recalls some of the strong songwriters of the ’90s. Slingerland released her debut EP “Come Back to Me” last year, and now she’s following it up with a sharp single that is all clean guitar and murky emotions.

“Crush Me,” out this week, is the title track of Slingerland’s second EP — and the soundtrack to riding the slippery slope between feeling at once hopeful and helpless at the outset of a new romance. They call them crushes for a reason, y’know. “It’s about wanting to give someone as much of yourself as you can in hopes of being loved in return,” says Slingerland, “and knowing that the possibility of extreme happiness also opens you up to extreme let-down.”

The single was made with long-time collaborators Genna Projansky (with whom Slingerland made her first EP) and India Pascucci on bass and drums, respectively. The EP was co-produced with Mike Pepe (who has worked with Taking Back Sunday and Bayside, among others).
