L.A. duo Lean have a penchant for creating bright, seemingly blithe guitar-pop with sneaky-smart lyrics. It was that way on the debut album from Stephen Johnson and Kyle McCammon, “Years” (released earlier this year), and it’s that way on their new single “Head in the Clouds.” While Lean’s hook will make you happy, the song confronts a person so toxic that they’re “sleeping with the lights on.” It’s all about knowing where you stand, and self-preservation: “I was a scapegoat for you / to escape from the truth,” Lean sings, deciding finally to let the whole relationship go.
